New Netflix documentary relates tragic story of young girl and Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
Starting at age 9, Maya Kowalski began suffering a number of persistent ailments, such that some medical personnel were led to believe her mother was experiencing Munchausen Syndrome by proxy. When Maya was 10, anesthesiologist Anthony Kirkpatrick diagnosed her with CRPS and treated her with ketamine, which brought temporary relief. Maya’s struggles continued, however, and led to involvement by child protective services, a mother’s suicide, and a lawsuit against a Florida hospital.
