CURRICULUM VITAE

PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY

Anthony Kirkpatrick, MD, PhD is a highly experienced anesthesiologist with over 25 years of clinical practice at Tampa General Hospital, the teaching hospital for the University of South Florida College of Medicine. Dr. Kirkpatrick has been a leader in pain management and the treatment of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), contributing to both clinical advancements and public advocacy.

Leadership and Advocacy

In 2001, Dr. Kirkpatrick founded the International Research Foundation for RSD/CRPS, a not-for-profit organization where he serves as Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Committee. The Foundation is committed to advancing research, maintaining ethical practices, and delivering measurable improvements in patient outcomes.

Contributions to Research

  • Peer-Reviewed Publications: The Foundation, in collaboration with the University of Florida, has contributed to groundbreaking research focused on optimizing ketamine treatment for CRPS patients. A key publication is available at Ketamine Study.
  • Ongoing Studies: Current research includes an examination of the long-term outcomes of ketamine therapy for CRPS patients, conducted in partnership with the University of Florida. These initiatives highlight Dr. Kirkpatrick’s dedication to advancing evidence-based treatments.

Commitment to Ethical and Transparent Care

As a not-for-profit surgery center, all proceeds from the Foundation are reinvested in CRPS research, ensuring the primary focus remains on improving patient care. The organization has also developed innovative methods for objectively measuring clinical outcomes, promoting transparency and continuous improvement.

Advocacy and Legal Contributions

Dr. Kirkpatrick played a significant role in the nationally recognized "Take Care of Maya" case, supporting Maya Kowalski, a young CRPS patient, in her legal battle against Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. This case, featured in a Netflix documentary, underscored the medical and legal challenges faced by CRPS patients and their families.

Dr. Kirkpatrick’s dedication to clinical excellence, ethical leadership, and impactful research continues to shape the field of pain management and inspire advancements in CRPS treatment.

INVENTIONS/PATENTS

United States Patent #4,306,018:

An integrated gas-heat exchanger that includes an aluminum cylinder with provision for passing a coolant through the center of the cylinder.  On the outside of the cylinder, a Silastic tube wound in a helix for the flow of blood is encased in a small Plexiglass compartment through which oxygen is pumped.  The oxygen passes through the Silastic membrane into the changer where it is purged.  The specific configuration for this lung has provided surprising results by operating in a manner much superior to other artificial lungs.

United States Patent #6,505,326 (Co-developer):

Microdroplets of water-insoluble drugs comprising of a sphere of the drug surrounded by a unimolecular phospholipid layer, suitable for administration by injection. I was instrumental in developing the technology and in obtaining an IND from the FDA. This unique technology is being applied to lipid soluble drugs to render a lower fat load in diluents and to make the drug preparations resistant to bacterial growth. To date (2006), more than $45 million has been spent in commercializing the technology.
